The Silk Topic

Take one fabric and look at it up close: how it takes the light, how it drapes, how it's cared for. The body knows silk's quality before the eyes do. This topic currently runs as a series of short deep reads within the topic page, while longer journal pieces are still in preparation; the “silk” in ANNONUS's Chinese name comes from silk itself.

The Silk Topic

First, watch how it takes the light

Good silk doesn't glare. Light moves slowly across its surface. Hold the fabric up to a window and watch how the folds fall as it drapes — that is its first letter to you.

Wear it, and care for it

Silk dislikes harsh sun and hard creases; it likes shade and air. Looking after it isn't difficult — it just asks you to put down the hurry. That, too, is a way of living we'd like to talk about.

The story continues

Between a single silkworm thread and a finished garment lie reeling, weaving, dyeing, and many pairs of hands. Next, we go and watch a length of silk being woven.

Judge knit by its drape: good knitwear has a skeleton of its own, clearest as it falls — soft, but never collapsed.

Judge a display by density: the weave's density and the yarn's temperament are all hidden within ten centimetres — touch before you buy. What the hand feels is more honest than what the eyes see.
